A Brazilian legend 400 years old inspired those two young contemporary artists.

It all started with a little boy and a little girl who loved listening to the mysterious story of Curupira. This fantastic creature with green teeth and red hair has the mission to protect nature, forests and all the animals of Brazil.

The popular myth inspired Ygor Marotta and Ceci Soloaga to create an imaginary world full of colors. Their mission is to revolutionize music and street art by a positive and loving message.

On their VJing mobile composed of 2 tricycles adapted with projector, batteries, speaker and computer, the two artists go along the streets of Rio to project their audiovisual creations. Using their tricycles allow them to travel ecologically and to have fun with their environment.

Their concept is such a success that now we can see them performing on the streets of the biggest towns of Europe.

Why is that? You get the answers in the Pavilion Zero held by the United Nations. “Almost one third of the volume of food produced for human consumption at global level is lost or wasted.” In developed countries, the major problem is the waste made by consumers. “In developing countries, losses are caused by inadequate harvesting and processing techniques, adverse weather, poor infrastructure and transportation systems, and the lack of efficient cold storage system”.

Even more because the food that was thrown away often contained more vitamins and nutrients than the children of the favelas found in their daily meals.

She invented a banana peel cake, fried melon rinds, a quiche of broccoli stems. Her recipes were an astounding success, quality meals at a low cost. She tackled her dream of becoming a Chef for 11 years and, in 2011, she launched Favela Organica with 70 dollars in her pocket.

« We teach people how to optimize each step of the food cycle, from the seed to the compost” Regina says with a glowing smile.

Her cooking classes attract those who need to save money, as well as the middle class searching for healthier and more responsible way of nourishing themselves.

Some learn to grow their own organic garden in small spaces. Pesticides tend to concentrate on fruit and vegies peels so it’s essential to grow organic food.

Our energetic Chef and her initiatives became very popular and Favela Organica has expanded throughout Brazil.

First of all, music and colors are all over the place; that’s essential for us to keep up the joy of living.

Brasil o pais do otismimo, we are the 200 Million most optimistic people in the world; we believe in the future and are not afraid of innovation. Tomorrow will certainly be better than today. As a proof, for the 10 last years, we have had “The prodigious decade” that has allowed a great number of very poor people to move into better circumstances. In 2015, we became the 6^th strongest world economy.

Last year, like 10 million other Brazilians, my parents took our airplane for the first time in their life and they were also able to buy their first car like 7 million Brazilians. We live in the huge city of Sao Paulo -24 million inhabitants-. We have a lot of traffic jams as we continue to build new streets.

Each day, I spend 6 hours on Internet and more than 2 hours on my mobile: we Brazilians are the most connected people in the world and that helped democracy during our protests in 2013.

Brasil, um pais de todos. Yes, I’m a Brazilian Japonese. My parents came from Japan and here it’s no problem because we are 138 different communities all living well together. We all speak Portugese. No discrimination is the word, nobody is left aside; blacks are equal to whites, a man equals a woman, all the buses are accessible to wheelchairs… Our social programs such as La Bolsa Familia inspire a lot of countries around the world.

My country is part of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) and of the 77 countries group . Brazil is the leader of the South-South relationships. We cooperate a lot to develop our countries.

What’s new about this? Well, we have numerous reasons to be very optimistic concerning the resulting impact of this conference.

1/ Barack Obama and Xi-Jiping have already made an accord. The United-States will reduce their carbon emissions from 26 to 28 % by 2025 in comparison to their 2005 emissions, and 20 % of the Chinese energy will be renewable by 2030. This accord is fundamental. These two countries are responsible for 40 % of all gas emissions causing the greenhouse effect. ⁽²⁾

2/ 50% of the new electrons in the world are produced by renewable energy, mainly because “in less than 4 years, the prices have fallen by 42 % for wind power, 68.1 % for photovoltaics and by 45.6 % for concentrated solar power. In France, these renewable energy programs would have saved 410 billion euros for the country.” ⁽³⁾

3/ Developing countries start to organize themselves to adopt directly these renewable technologies, in the same way that they went to mobile telephone bypassing the fixed lines. ⁽³⁾

4/ Last May in Paris, for the Climate Business Summit, more than 1000 firm deciders, investors and major companies CEOs met to come up with solutions. A declaration of intention was signed by 25 enterprise and investor coalitions, representing more than 6 billion companies based in 130 countries! Invest of course, but also “act on the emergence of a carbon tarification.”⁽⁴⁾

5/ It’s quite a challenge for all the companies but, in the end, « An opportunity for growth » (Pierre-André de Chalendar, Saint-Gobain CEO) and “a factor for innovation” (Jean-Pascal Tricoire, Schneider Electric CEO).⁽⁴⁾

6/ It’s also a wonderful opportunity for equilibrium between North and South: “The emerging economies are as important as the developed economies to fight against global warming » underlines Mahendra Singhi, the Indian CEO of Dalmia cement. ⁽⁴⁾

7/ And the 7th reason is that we are certain that we, Future Shapers that play a determining role for tomorrow, are going to find innovative solutions to brilliantly insuring this necessary planetary transition! Congrats to each of us!

They use a machine, the Pee-Generateur- cost $64 by the way – which transforms urine into fuel. A single liter of urine is enough for lighting several bulbs, a television or a fan during 6 hours. Ohio, United States, resarchs show that the urine from 1250 people would allow a car to roll up to 480 km ! Figure out how to get that many people in your car

United Kingdom, Bristol Robotic Laboratory: soon, thanks to their Smartoilette, your smartphone won’t die in the middle of the news or during your favorite video game.

Scotland, University of Edimburg : Peter Trimble  succeeded, after hundreds of failures, to produce a material 70 % as resistant as concrete.

United States : The architect Ginger Krieg Dosier invents biobricks : sand, calcium chloryde and urine, a brick which, contrary to traditional bricks, doesn’t need to be fired. This is why it’s such an interesting eco-material.

China: in the schools, a new sort of contest: the winner is… the class which collects the most urine to be transformed into a precious fertilizer for the surrounding fields.

India, the aryurvedic medecine has been prescribing the use of urine for more than 5000 years and has practicioners in many countries. *. Our urine containts not less than 3000 chemical substances while remaining sterile. And several of our medicines have contained urine for a long time.

This fact convinced the pediatrician Dr. Sathya Jeganathan to import Western incubators. But this expensive and complex equipment did not fit the hospital needs.

So, together with neonatal nurses and local electricians, she builds a minimalist incubator: a table made of local wood, Plexiglass top and standard 100-watt light bulbs to keep the baby warm. This easy to maintain incubator only costs 100 dollars versus western incubators that can cost up to 20,000 dollars.

The first working prototype incubator cut by half the babies’ mortality in the hospital. It’s now developed on a larger scale in collaboration with the Lemelson Foundation in the U.S.

In emerging markets, simple, affordable and innovative solutions are coming up everywhere. It’s at the same time a profitable market and a way of serving the many… and might be a wonderful opportunity for you.

At the same time, Western people, definitely including Generation Y and Z, are heading towards a simpler and more meaningful life. They are fed up with complex technology they don’t need. (2)

Apple, Facebook and Google understood this very well by proposing very simple products. Nokia sent its ethnographers in Brazil, India, Ghana to study how technology could ease the life of the underserved people there.  And they came up with NOKIA 1100 (lien), the best-ever selling cellphone on the planet!
